Paramedic fired
March 23, 2006

Theresa Rinehart had her say. Then she lost her job.

The Greenfield Board of Works, after two days and 10 hours of testimony, fired the city paramedic late Wednesday. The vote was not unanimous: Sarah Wolf warned that the city was in a legal quagmire in terms of state statutes and job descriptions.

GREENFIELD, Ind. - The Greenfield Board of Works voted two to one in favor of upholding a recommendation by the town's fire chief to terminate paramedic Theresa Rinehart's employment with the department.

Rinehart was placed on administrative leave after an infant died in her care in September. 11-month-old Raime Evanson choked on a piece of spaghetti.

Indiana paramedic fights to keep job
February 6, 2006

GREENFIELD, Ind. - Theresa Rinehart says she should not have been put on administrative duty by the Greenfield Fire Department and plans to fight the city if her employment is terminated Monday.

"I have done nothing wrong," said Rinehart, who has been a full-time paramedic since 1998. "This has been devastating for me and my family."

This week Greenfield Fire Chief Lewis McQueen recommended that the city terminate Rinehart after the county's new medical director refused to allow her to provide any emergency medical services under his license.

Indiana chief seeks to fire paramedic
February 3, 2006

GREENFIELD, Ind. - Greenfield Fire Chief Lewis McQueen has recommended that paramedic Theresa Rinehart be fired after the county's new medical director banned her from providing emergency medical services.

In a letter to McQueen dated Tuesday, the medical director, Dr. John Jones, says Rinehart won't be allowed to practice as a paramedic under his license. The move continues a suspension first put in place last October by the previous medical director, Dr. William Rutherford. It essentially means she can't be a paramedic in Hancock County.

McQueen told Mayor Rodney Fleming on Wednesday that he would ask the city's board of works to fire Rinehart. City policy requires that all firefighters also function as paramedics. "We have no option other than to terminate her employment," the chief says in a letter to Fleming.
