The Indianapolis Car Accident Lawyers with Stewart & Stewart Attorneys state that most motorists are aware of the dangers driving drunk can pose, but many are unaware of the risks of drugged driving.
Experts say that the number of motorists driving under the influence of controlled substances has increased in recent years. Data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that as many as 20 percent of motorists will get behind the wheel after consuming drugs. This behavior is responsible for causing thousands of accidents per year.
One such collision occurred in Feb. 2012 and claimed the life of a 32-year-old man. According to an article from the Indy Star, the woman responsible for causing the wreck was recently sentenced to eight years in prison.
The 24-year-old driver had consumed Spice, a synthetic form of the drug marijuana, prior to getting behind the wheel of her vehicle and crashing. The impact killed the passenger in her vehicle.
Throughout the course of the case, the woman stated she was sorry for her mistakes. However, prosecutors pointed to testing that showed the woman tested positive for marijuana use three times following the accident.
Stewart & Stewart’s team of Indianapolis Personal Injury Lawyers recognizes the dangers drugged driving can pose and ask motorists to never drive after consuming anything that impairs sound judgment.
