Women who give birth in Indiana have much greater risk of death than national average

Giving birth is a beautiful and joyous time for most families, but it can also be a scary medical ordeal that leads to terrible circumstances. Here in the United States, it’s reported that more than 700 women die every single year during or directly after giving birth — a rate so high, it pairs the U.S. with third world countries when comparing mortality rates during birth.

For Indiana residents, the numbers get even more grim. Here, we rank third for the worst birth-related mortality rates in the country—and the families affected by these deaths are searching for answers. Stewart & Stewart client, Tana Tyler, recently died after giving birth to her son and her family is now struggling with the aftermath. “She was a daughter, a mother, a sister, a cousin, a granddaughter, a niece, a friend,” said Tana’s mother, LaDonna Fields. “This changed my whole family.”

If you or a loved one experienced birth defects or a death after or during birth, you deserve to be compensated for your loss and the pain and suffering your family has experienced. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you.

Stewart & Stewart Teen Academy

Sponsored by Stewart & Stewart, the Carmel Police Department hosts Teen Academy every summer to support local teens in the community. Students accepted into the program will learn decision-making and leadership skills while creating fond relationships with their local police and peers.

Held on the Carmel Middle School campus, students will spend a week taking classes on topics like SWAT, internet abuse, and traffic stops and will participate in close order drill and physical fitness training.

On the first day, students will receive a t-shirt to wear and a water bottle, provided by Stewart & Stewart. Due to the Stewart & Stewart sponsorship, all teens can attend the program free of charge, and at the end of the program, all participating teens will get to enjoy an award ceremony complete with a catered dinner.

To apply for the next Teen Academy, or to learn more about the program, visit the website or give Stewart & Stewart a call at 1-800-333-3529.

Whistleblower Meets Moms and Children seeking Justice
WTHR-TV – June 14, 2017

Donna Mills lost her pregnant daughter due to critical information missed by a certified nurse midwife, and her grandson now lives with developmental delays. Nancy Koger’s daughter was born with permanent brain damage after a certified nurse midwife failed to understand her baby’s fetal heart distress. Stewart & Stewart is handling medical malpractice claims on behalf of both families following allegations that the state’s largest health system, Indiana University Health and HealthNet, was illegally billing doctors rates for certified nurse midwives to handle high-risk pregnancies.
