Police placed a Muncie, Indiana, woman in handcuffs directly after her release from an Indianapolis hospital Monday afternoon on a felony charge of Driving While Intoxicated with a Minor in a Vehicle.
The 49-year-old woman is accused of being intoxicated, passing out behind the wheel of her Ford Aspire, and causing a two-car crash Friday night on Kilgore Avenue in Muncie. At the time, there were five children under the age of 13 in the vehicle with her; police believe that none were wearing seatbelts.
Tests indicate that the woman had cocaine, marijuana, and painkillers in her bloodstream at the time of the crash.
The accident occurred after the woman passed out, sending her Ford Aspire careening head-on into a Ford F-350 pickup around 10:10 p.m. Police say a 13-year-old girl in the car tried to grab the steering wheel but was unable to avoid the collision.
The woman was seriously injured in the crash, as were four of the five children in her vehicle. Police told The Star Press that they believe two of the five children were the woman’s own.
The woman, who is now in the Delaware County Jail, was reportedly taking the children out for pizza.
Delaware County Deputy Prosecutor Zachary Craig says she may face additional charges after the investigation is complete.
