Indiana Burn Injury Lawyers Offer Winter Fire Prevention and Safety Tips

Feb 5, 2014 | Fire and Burn Injury

Share

According to the American Burn Association, more than 450,000 people per year seek medical treatment for injuries related to a fire or burn. Of those individuals, roughly 40,000 are hospitalized, while another 34,000 become casualties. The Indiana Fire and Burn Injury Lawyers with Stewart & Stewart Attorneys point out studies have shown that due to increased usage of heating and other fuel sources, the winter months can have an increased chance of such accident occurring.

In an effort to reduce such accidents, a list of safety tips was created by Inman News and included highlights, such as:

  • Supervise Use of Combustibles – Never leave candles, hot ashes in a fireplace, or space heaters running or burning without the presence of an adult.
  • Avoid Extension Cords – While lights and decorations around the holidays may call for electricity from a far-off source, avoid using extension cords if possible. If they must be used though, ensure the cord is appropriate for its location (indoor or outdoor) and is capable of handling the wattage it will be carrying.
  • Be Prepared – Ensure a smoke alarm is present in each room of the home. Also, have an escape route planned for a quick exit from a residence in case of a fire. Having renter’s insurance to cover the expenses associated with a fire and it’s losses can also prove to be crucial.

Stewart & Stewart Attorneys and their team of Indiana Personal Injury Lawyers understand how devastating fires can be and are hopeful these tips help to keep citizens safe!
