Proposed Federal Law Would Allow Longer Commercial Trucks on the Road

Jul 8, 2015 | Truck Accident

Numerous studies have shown that larger, heavier commercial tractor-trailers present greater dangers in accidents—they take longer to stop, make wider turns, wear down equipment faster, and are often too wide to use only one lane. The Indianapolis truck accident lawyers at Stewart & Stewart Attorneys explain that despite these risks, lawmakers have advanced a bill allows commercial trucks to haul longer trailers.

According to 12 News Now, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a change in policy that would increase the maximum legal length of commercial truck trailers from 28 to 33 feet. The reform was spearheaded by trucking industry giants, the American Trucking Association and FedEx Corp., as a means to increase profits by moving more products in a single load. Opponents of the changes explain the new rules will put the public at an increased risk of accidents.

The bill is far from becoming law, though. It must first pass a Senate vote without opposition before making it’s way to the White House for the President’s final approval.

At Stewart & Stewart Attorneys, we recognize the risks that larger commercial vehicles can pose on the road. That’s why our Indianapolis personal injury lawyers are anxious to see whether or not the bill becomes law.
