What Do I Do If I Get into an Accident While in Traffic?

Getting into an accident is a jarring experience—we are often caught off guard, dealing with immediate pain and unsure of what will happen next. But what happens if that accident occurs while we are stuck in traffic? Often, traffic-related accidents aren’t as terrible as cars are moving slower, but that doesn’t mean that tragic accidents don’t happen when there is an influx of cars on the roadways.

What to do if you get into a car accident in trafficIf you are the victim of the accident, the best thing you can try and do is move your car and yourself out of the way. Even if cars are at a standstill, you are still in danger of getting hit again if you are not able to move. Call the police right away and once they arrive, they should be able to help maneuver other cars so you can move yours onto the emergency lanes. Never stand on the roads, even if traffic is not moving. You never know when a sudden change in traffic patterns can occur and you don’t want to be standing in the road when the traffic begins to clear.

Since there is so much blockage, it may be difficult for the police to get to you in a timely manner. If you are badly injured, make sure you let them know so they can take the necessary precautions and ensure you get to a hospital as soon as you can. If injuries aren’t dire, the best thing you can do is be patient: the police are likely stuck in the traffic as well and it may take a lot of time for them to get to you. While you wait, take down the information of the other driver, take photos and ask those around you if they witnessed what happened. The only good thing about this situation is that it’s likely at least one other driver witnessed the crash.

If you aren’t the victim of the accident, but rather dealing with the aftermath of traffic from a prior accident, be sure you drive carefully. Sitting in traffic can cause anxiety, especially if you are in a rush to get somewhere. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. Try to safely get over and exit at the next exit, if possible, and keep your eyes on the road. Looking down at your phone, putting your break on, or getting out of your car in traffic can cause you to get badly injured and could even be illegal depending on your state. Avoid switching lanes too often and stay calm: help is likely on the way and you will be out of this predicament soon.
