What Every Driver Should Do Right After a Vehicle Crash

No one expects to end up in a vehicle accident, but chances are, you’ll eventually experience one in your lifetime. If your accident is anything more than a fender bender, take the steps outlined below and talk to a vehicle crash lawyer ASAP. Bookmark this list for future reference.

1. Call the Police or 911

Safety first: Before you do anything else, make sure you and others move away from any oncoming traffic, if possible. Then, call 911 or the police.

Reporting a car accident is mandatory in Indiana if the collision leads to injuries, fatalities, or property damage over $1,000. In any case, it’s better to err on the side of caution by calling law enforcement for two reasons: First, it can be hard to assess the extent of the damage right away. Second, you’ll need that police report as evidence. Wait for the police on the scene if you can.

2. Exchange Information With the Other Driver

Exchanging information after a crash is another critical step (unless you suffered a hit-and-run, of course). Talk to the other driver, or drivers, and take their contact and insurance details. Note their vehicle’s license plate number. Try to stay polite and non-confrontational, even if the other motorist blames or attempts to provoke you.

3. Collect Evidence

While waiting for the police, you have a one-time opportunity to document accident details that will disappear later. Take photos and videos of the entire scene, including the collision angle, road conditions, debris or skid marks, and damage to your vehicle.

If anyone else saw the accident, ask for their contact details. Save all this evidence to share with your vehicle crash lawyer.

4. See a Doctor

Seeking medical attention after an accident is indispensable, even if you feel almost fine. Some serious injuries, especially brain and internal organ damage, may not be immediately obvious. A medical checkup will help rule out any life-threatening conditions and ensure you start the proper treatment right away.

This initial checkup is also critical to establish a connection between the accident and your injury. Ensure you keep all your medical records and bills, as these are critical for establishing your claim. Bring your medical documentation when you consult a vehicle crash lawyer.

5. Call Your Insurer

Notifying insurance company representatives is another quick but essential step to take after a car crash. No matter who’s responsible for the accident, you must let your insurance provider know you suffered a collision within 24-72 hours, depending on your policy.

What if the other driver’s insurer calls you? You don’t have to talk to them and probably shouldn’t, at least until you talk to a lawyer. Anything you say could potentially undermine your claim.

6. Talk to a Vehicle Crash Lawyer

Consult an experienced local attorney to ensure you take the proper legal steps after a car accident. Auto accident lawyers usually offer a free initial consultation, which is a great opportunity to assess whether you’d feel comfortable working with this legal professional.

A seasoned lawyer can let you know how much your case is worth, who’s responsible for compensating you, and how soon you may expect your case to settle.
