This week is “Teen Driver Safety Week” across the United States—for good reason, too. Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens between ages 15-19. As part of the campaign, several organizations are working to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving habits. Our Indianapolis car accident lawyers would also like to remind teens about several rules of the road they should keep in mind:
- Follow Speed Limits – Most roads have a maximum speed vehicles should maintain. However, it’s important for teens to know they should only operate a vehicle at a speed that is safe for the conditions.
- Don’t Use Your Phone – An article from WLFI 8 News explains that on July 1, 2015, a new law took effect that prohibits drivers who are under the age 21 from using any type of telecommunications device while driving, including hands-free devices. The only exception to the rule is if the device is being used to make an emergency call.
- Drive Sober – One of the leading causes of accidents among teens is intoxication due to alcohol or drug consumption. There is a zero tolerance policy for driving under the influence if you are under under age 21.
The legal staff at Stewart & Stewart Attorneys recognize the importance of getting information out to teen drivers about the dangers of the road and our Indianapolis personal injury lawyers are hopeful these tips help teens to prevent accidents in the future.
